Walden - Henry David Thoreau (MP3 & PDF)

from my Summer Reading post

Arguably America’s most famous nonconformist, Thoreau lived at Walden Pond from July 1845 to September 1847, chronicling his experiences there. It was an experiment in living a life unhindered by social trappings and tradition. His work was not widely renowned for years after his death, but later became a staple in modern culture, defining not only what it means to be an American, but what it means to be human. Come see where the idea of marching to the beat of a different drummer originated. Walden is a classic and essential reading.

Study Debunks Claim That Pot Smoking Causes Mental Illness

yourwonderingmind:

Much has made — by the mainstream media and others — of the claim that cannabis use causes certain types of mental illness, specifically schizophrenia and psychosis.

Most notably perhaps, a…

I will go along with it but if we are sitting around the camp fire being completely honest, I am definitely crazy.

Taibbi on Goldman Sachs: “Planet-eating Death Star,” “Vampire squid” - Boing Boing

Definitely read this if you haven’t already. Gives great insight to the last 5 major economic bubbles and also talks about how Goldman Sachs has positioned itself to make a killing off the upcoming Cap and Trade Carbon Credits program.

Calvin Wallace must have some very expensive pork chops. When he was arrested early today and charged with drug trafficking for allegedly having 54.3 grams of MDMA, used to make the drug ecstasy, he told officers it was “flour for my porkchops.

WOMP/IHNKEN's Official Statement on Summer Solstice Projekt

Ihnken/WOMP’s official statement regarding the Summer Solstice Projekt Music Festival:

Our deepest apologies go out to all of our guests especially those who traveled hours to the Summer Solstice Projekt only to be turned away at the gate with little or no explanation. We did in fact have the proper permit to run from 8am Thursday to 5am Sunday with the ability to serve alcohol and no county official has any right to revoke that or to force all of you to leave a piece of private property.

We have today (07.01.09) notified Frederick County and the officials responsible for this decision that we are taking legal action for their prejudicial decision. We will be mailing replacement tickets out to all guests on our mailing list as an attempt to ratify some of your concerns. In our society there are real repercussions for real mistakes and these individuals will pay for this grievous injustice.

Wish this came out sooner but understandable considering they were in the process of putting their legal case together. After reviewing some of the info they actually have a case, and the festival being shut down is about as small town politics as you can get. As more about the legal battle becomes public knowledge I will continue to post it up onto here - After all I did promote the shit out of the festival for a 3 solid months, it is the least I can do.
